Vega Sicilia was the brainchild of Don Eloy Lecanda y Chaves, who arrived in Spain from Bordeaux in the mid-19th century. With him, he brought Bordelais grape varieties - Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Malbec - and created vineyards from them, as well as Tinto Fino (the local name for Tempranillo). This impeccably run winery has changed hands several times over the years and since 1982 has been owned by the Alvarez family. And they have started working beyond the boundaries of Ribera del Duero in Toro (Pintia) and with a joint venture with the Rothschilds in Rioja (Macan).
